Tricky Grammar Story Starters
This download contains a three-page worksheet that includes three distinct activities and a separate ‘Teacher notes’ document.
The session begins with a memorable image prompt showing a British newspaper dating from 1926, which can be used to stimulate class discussion or as the basis for a short writing activity. Students are then given chance to familiarise themselves with different types of layout devices used in a newspaper report and come up with examples of where they’ve seen them being used.
Finally, the students are tasked with applying what they have learnt by using layout devices to present three key facts about a topic they know well.
When writers want to convey information in a way that’s clear and easy for readers to follow and understand, they will make use of different layout devices, such as the following:
Pupils should be taught to draft and write by using further organisational and presentational devices to structure text and to guide the reader [for example, headings, sub-headings, columns, bullets or tables to structure text]
