Another important literary theme links the texts to be looked at in the second term of Year 5, as children are asked what might connect the legend of the Phoenix with a story about a bully who changes his ways and a spring poem. Resources to support children in making connections between the texts can be found in the ‘pulling it all together’ pack, as can a suggested list of books also linked to the theme, which could be read as a class.

What's the best way to get the world ready for spring after a long, dark winter? Give it a good scrub-up, of course!
Find out about a legend that has inspired artists and creators for centuries, all over the globe.
Every bully has a story - and sometimes, it's a surprisingly sad one.
Once you have gone through all three texts with pupils, establishing familiarity and understanding with each, you can use these additional resources to help children engage with them thematically, making links between the texts, and to others they may have read or heard of. A suggested list of books for class reading, linked to the unit theme, is also included.
