What is a simple sentence?
A simple sentence is usually short, and requires as a minimum a subject and a main verb. Generally they are expressing one basic idea, and are therefore very easy to understand.

- Mr Ship ran to the shop.
- The tree has long branches.
- The girl played with the ball.

Write simple dictated sentences that include words taught so far gives pupils opportunities to apply and practise their spelling.
Write sentences by:
- saying out loud what they are going to write about
- composing a sentence orally before writing it
- sequencing sentences to form short narratives
- re-reading what they have written to check that it makes sense
