This Real Grammar resources pack provides everything that you need to successfully explore how capital letters are used when writing names of people and places with pupils in Year 1 or to revisit this learning. Teaching slides, worksheets, games and an opportunity to apply the new learning in a writing task are all included to create a complete resource. Pupils will write simple sentences and should be familiar with capital letters and how they are formed. Real Grammar resource packs on capital and lowercase letters, the use of ‘I’ and the use of capital letters for the days of the week are also available.
What do pupils learn about capital letters in Year 1?
Pupils need to learn that capital letters are used for names of people, places and days of the week (proper nouns) and when using the personal pronoun ‘I’. They should learn how capital letters are formed and their size compared to lowercase letters.
What is a proper noun?
Proper nouns name a specific person, place or organisation. Days of the week and months of the year are also proper nouns. Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter. Examples of proper nouns are Lizzie, Monday, London or St Peter’s School. There is no requirement in the National Curriculum to introduce the term ‘proper noun’ to pupils in Year 1, with the term noun being introduced in Year 2; however, you may wish to introduce this to the pupils in Year 1.
What is included in this resource pack?
This pack is divided into five parts:
TEACHThis section includes PowerPoint teaching slides and teaching notes with an optional script to introduce using capital letters for names (proper nouns) to your pupils. It can also be used to revisit this aspect of grammar with pupils.
