Develop pupils’ use of a range of elements from different genres to help them to develop rich texts when writing.

This resource, from Matthew Lane, will encourage pupils to use ideas from across a range of texts that pupils are familiar with from lessons and their wider reading, and will see them applying this more independently – a key aspect of greater depth writing at the end of Key Stage 2.

This pack includes:

  • Colour wheel – a PDF worksheet to be used as a teaching tool to show how the style of different genres can blended within texts
  • PowerPoint – the colour wheel for display
  • Teacher notes

National Curriculum Objectives

  • Pupils should be taught to plan their writing by discussing writing that is similar to what they are planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar.
  • Pupils should be taught to plan their writing by identifying the audience for and purpose for writing, selecting the appropriate form and using other similar writing as models for their own.
  • Pupils should be taught to draught and write by selecting appropriate grammar and vocabulary, understanding how such choices can change and enhance meaning.
