Are you marking World Refugee Day with your class this June?
In this resource pack, pupils will be introduced to the term ‘refugee’ and its meaning before exploring why people may seek safety in a different country. Pupils will discuss how they would feel if they had to suddenly leave their home to seek refuge and discuss how they could welcome people into their school and community.
This whole school resource can be used to prompt discussion around refugees, with an assembly to introduce this to pupils. Activities can be adapted for both Key Stages 1 and 2.
The resource pack includes:
- Assembly slides, introducing World Refugee Day
- Image of new pupil outside school
- ‘A Warm Welcome’ worksheet
- KS2 discussion cards
- Glossary of terminology and vocabulary cards
What is World Refugee Day?
World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations in 2001 to remember the obstacles and struggles refugees face every year and to also celebrate their bravery. It takes place every year, on June 20th.
