The versatile zone of relevance resource supports pupils to develop their own word banks to describe characters or settings or to sort information for non-fiction. Pupils can use the worksheet to place words or phrases that are most and least relevant to help organise their ideas and vocabulary choices before writing. It could also be used to gather information about characters or settings in books that are currently being shared as a class.
A zone of relevance can also be used when preparing non-fiction writing. Pupils could place factual information that they have found to show how relevant it might be for the writing they are asked to produce, for example an advert, discussion or letter about a recent trip.
The resource includes a simple zone of relevance outline that can be adapted for use with different activities and could be enlarged for display. Pupils will place information or words that are most relevant in the centre, then somewhat relevant and least relevant. Information that is completely irrelevant can be placed outside the circles. Simple word and phrase cards are included to help pupils identify what might be relevant to use when describing characters or settings.
