Revisit instructional writing with pupils in year 5 and year 6 using this resource pack based on mixing potions and spells using ingredients from a witch’s store cupboard. Pupils will read a model text taken from a witch’s book of spells and potions, which can be used to identify the features of instructional writing. A selection of spell and potion cards are included to inspire pupils to create their own instructional writing that can be added to the witch's book of spells and potions.
There are suggested activities to teach the use of modal verbs and layout devices within the teaching sequence.
The resource could be used as part of a topic day based on Halloween, or over a series of English lessons. It could also be used as a writing project which would be perfect for home learning or as a fun homework task.
